Chapter Thirteen

Mason

The day started well for Mason. He left Shorty’s house at five, heading to his apartment for a shower. After that, he finished up a quick job he had on the schedule to replace a kitchen faucet for an elderly woman his sister had just sold a condo to. Then, he went to the vet clinic to see Champ.

Champ was doing well, according to the vet. They had stitched up his wounds and were monitoring Champ’s vitals. Everything was stable or showing signs of improvement. Mason hung out with him for an hour, cuddling and petting him, before the vet encouraged Mason to allow Champ to rest. After promising to return the next day, Mason left the clinic.

As he left the clinic, Mason decided to grab food before he headed to Shorty’s property. He pulled into the parking lot of his favorite deli and headed inside.

“Mason, my boy,” Jack Ashe, the elderly owner of Ashe Deli called out from behind the counter. The man gave Mason a huge smile and reached across the counter to shake Mason’s hand. “Good to see you.”

“You, too. Had a hankering for a Jack Ashe original.”

“Of course! Of course! I’ve got you covered.” The man started putting together a long sub for Mason, knowing what Mason liked and what he didn’t.

“Also, I’m trying to impress a feisty, intelligent woman who doesn’t have an aversion to food. Think you can help me with that?”

Jack bobbed his eyebrows and grinned at Mason. “A curvy woman, eh? She’s not one of those women who are constantly trying to lose them?”

Mason shook his head. “Not from what I can tell. She seems to embrace them, as she should. She’s flipping gorgeous.”

“You want a sub for this lovely lady or some dessert?”

“Both. Surprise us. I’m heading to her place to help her turn a barn into kennels for her dog rescue.”

Jack stopped putting together the masterpiece of a sub sandwich and lifted his head to look Mason in the eye. “She saves dogs?”

Mason nodded. “Yes.”

“She’s smart and feisty and curvy and saves dogs?”

“And funny. And not afraid to put me in my place.”

The elderly man started chuckling and went back to fixing Mason’s sub. “Oh, my boy, you’re in for a wild ride. You better snatch that one up. She sounds like my beautiful Belinda. She has kept me young, my boy. You snatch this one up. She will make your life a joy. You hear me?” He wrapped up Mason’s sandwich in the paper sheets covered in the deli’s logo. “I want to meet this woman.”

Mason chuckled. “I’m trying, Jack. If things go well, I’ll bring her in for lunch sometime next week.”

“Don’t waste time with the stupid games you kids play these days. You tell her what she means to you and what you feel for her. When you find a diamond, you don’t delay in snatching it up and holding it close. You understand me?”

Mason gave a firm nod. “I promise.”

“Good.” Jack nodded back and started making another sub.
